Drab To Fab - Old Dresser Makeover

Top pic: pennypincherfashion  Bottom pic: designsponge

Maybe it's my penchant to pull for the underdog or maybe I just like the challenge of fixing broken things. ....whatever it is makes me gravitate to old dressers like a moth to a flame.  I mean seriously.  The more messed up the better, I aint scared!  My only criteria is, the piece has to have good bones or a solid structure. Once I have a good base to work from, the sky is the limit.

Here are a few ways to put new life into old beat up dressers.

As a artist, whenever I get a chance to use my creativity for something practical it makes me all sorts of happy.  So, when I saw this gorgeous redone dresser by go.tipjunkie I just knew I had make one of my own.  It is hand painted, the dresser was painted white then the branches was added in acrylic.  The birds however were cut out images that was decoupaged unto the dresser. How smart is that...hand painted furniture like this cost thousands.

I adore the color on this piece from migonishome So fresh, romantic and glamorous.  All that from a can of paint.

Who wouldn't want a piece like this, the color is delicious!

And check out this stunning piece, could you believe it once looked like the picture below?
Dark brown paint and metal studs from Walmart transformed this ugly duckling into a swan.

By far the easiest technique to do, wall paper is instant gratification.  Find a tutorial here on this process.

In the decorating world, mirrors and crystal chandeliers = BLING.  If you are a little more adventurous like I am, add mirrors to your dresser.  Just measure and have them cut for you.  After that, all you have to do is glue them on and have your husband/hubby or some one handy to drill holes for your draw pulls......and viola!  Not bad for a piece of furniture that you are gonna love! It sure beats spending $2,000 on a ready made mirrored dresser.  This one looks fantastic for less than $50.00.  Cha- ching!

Well, there you have it.  I hope this post makes you think twice before you toss that old dresser to the curb.  It may be a diamond in the rough.

Goodwill Hunting - Bargains For All!

When it comes to bargain shopping, I am like a lion on the Serengeti, I can stalk, hunt and negotiate with the best of I totally enjoy the whole experience.  It is a great feeling to see your hard earned money go farther and accomplish much more than you expected.  It never gets old.

A few weeks ago, a very dear friend of mine sent me a link to and as the saying goes "the rest is history".  I am obsessed with this site.   It is not just "a" goodwill shop, it is ALL of the goodwill shops in the US combined and available online.  Imagine that and I dare you not to get happy.
From collectibles to Art, Sports memorabilia, vintage jewelry and so much more, you can find it all there on the site.  All you you need is a little patience to sort through the extensive listings.  Trust me, it pays off big time so take your time and have fun!

Once you find what you want, you can go ahead and bid on it. Just sign up/create an account which is a very easy process and you are ready to bargain!  After that, if you are the winning bidder on an item, once it is paid for, your purchase will be shipped to you.  Easy, peasy. This is perfect for anyone with an ebay business since you can buy collectibles for a good price and sell them over.  Check it out, it is so worth it.

All of the pieces shown in this post are items that I am bidding on or won already.  What do you think?
This is a very old oil painting, it is signed by the artist and worth a lot more than I paid for it. Cha ching!

This piece is a vintage necklace, the stones are glass set against a gold tone base.

This is a vintage still life I fell in love with, the colors are exquisite in this piece.

And finally the piece de resistance, a Vintage Xinling Gorge Watercolor Scroll. I adore this piece.

Craft Of The Week

All A'bloom

When I started this blog, my intention was to post craft projects weekly.  Somehow though, mostly due to my work schedule, these postings became farther and farther apart.  I am not happy about.  At all.  And so, this post will be the first of "creation/craft of the week" which will be whatever I created for the week.  I am looking forward to learning new techniques and crafts....good, bad or ugly, I will be sharing it so stay tuned.

Here are a few pieces I painted this week.

You Are Not Alone

As For Me And My House

These are all mix media pieces (acrylics and pastels on heavy weight paper) and I had so much fun playing with the colors.  Next time though, I will use a new medium or technique to ensure that I am challenging myself and learning something new every week.  Sounds like a plan?  I think so......let's do this!

Bold & Beautiful Kitchen Color Inspiration

A few days ago my sister was debating which color palette she was going to put in her kitchen.  As always I offered my favorite colors for consideration but she kinda stopped listening when I suggested  mauve.  She wasn't feeling it......and I get it.  I love colors that are a bit unusual. NOT weird but a little different.  Anyway, that conversation led to this post.  I just had to find a few like minded individuals who threw color caution to the winds.

I love a white kitchen but sometimes there is nothing like a pop of color to add some spice in the kitchen.  Can I get a Amen!  Here are a few of my favorites. What do you think?

Age Defying Divas - Weight Loss & Fitness Inspiration

About a week ago, my sister sent this video to me and it totally blew me away.  If there is a fountain of youth, Annette Larkin has taken more than a sip from it.  She looks fabulous!  I was so inspired by her story that 70% of my diet is now raw vegetables, fruits and grains too. I am not 100% raw like she is (hey, baby steps) but the health benefits of my new diet regimen is nothing short of incredible. This is only week one for me and I know there will be meat craving bumps along the way but am up for the challenge.  Bring it on!

Another lady who inspires me is Ernestine Shepard. She is a 74 year old body builder and athlete who currently holds the Guinness book of world records for being the oldest female body builder.  And, for all of us late bloomers, she started her fitness journey in her 50's. Yep, it is NEVER too late.
Ernestine starts her day at 4am in the morning and diligently runs 10 miles...every day.  She is also a fitness instructor, personal trainer and avid marathon competitor.  Whew! tired just thinking about all this stuff.  This lady is no joke.  She and Annette are solid proof that you can be healthy and look fierce at any age.  It's up to you though, so go get it!

Seafoam Green - Fun. Fresh. Fabulous.

To say I love sea foam green is a gross understatement.  I looooooooooooooooove this color.  Passionately.  There are so many reasons why but here are a few:
Sea foam Green Is
.  Fresh and feminine
. Perfect combination of both blue (cyan) and green....and I love both colors.
. Bold and serene at the same time
. Looks great on all skin tones
. Works excellently with warm colors like reds, yellows, oranges etc.
. Is a very peaceful and tranquil color
Happy without being overly bright and reminds me of Spring
As it's name implies, sea foam green is the color of the sea
. Has a history of sophistication and grandeur but also has a strong modern appeal as well
Is perfect as a neutral color
. Very versatile, looks gorgeous in a glamorous setting and equally as nice in a casual

This spring I was pleasantly surprised and siked to see that finally, this color is getting the recognition it deserves.  Pantone declared it one of it's hot colors for Spring which is great but I could care less.  I would wear it anyway even if it was not "in".  Just sayin.  This color is fabulous, chic and I personally never tire of it.......but that's me and as you can see I am totally smitten.  What do you think?
